Police intercept £5,200 worth of cannabis sent to North Tyneside from United States

Police have seized more than £5,000 worth of cannabis sent from the United States to North Tyneside.

Officers intercepted the package as part of Operation Avert - a joint initiative by the North East Regional Special Operations Unit (NERSOU) and the UK Border Force Agency to prevent drugs from entering the country.

The package from the US, which was on its way to Killingworth, was found with £5,200 worth of cannabis inside.

Officers have reaffirmed their commitment to the joint operation aimed at keeping borders secure after the cannabis was intercepted at a depot.

A spokesperson NERSOU’s disruption team said: “We know members of the public have differing views on the legality of cannabis but our work here is to make sure packages containing illegal and harmful substances are intercepted and prevented from hitting our streets.

“We will continue to work with our partners to make sure our communities stay safe.”

The repercussion of buying illegal drugs online range from advice, to prosecution and imprisonment.
