Police informed after travellers set up camp on popular park in Mansfield

Police and the council are working together to remove a group of travellers who have pitched up on Berry Hill Park in Mansfield.

The group set up camp on the popular park at around noon on Friday, July 3, with residents in the area saying they witnessed "cutting bolts" to gain access to the site.

Mansfield District Council has confirmed that it is working with Nottinghamshire Police to get the group removed "as quickly as possible".

A spokesperson said: "We are aware of an unauthorised encampment on Berry Hill Park and are working on-site in partnership with Nottinghamshire Police.

"We will follow the usual legal processes, if necessary, to reclaim the land as quickly as possible."

Julie Tasker, who runs the Supporting Berry Hill Park group on Facebook, lives in nearby Berry Hill Hall and said the park's entrance off Berry Hill Lane has been closed.

"Police are on Berry Hill Park overseeing both near the caravans and on the Lichfield Lane Gate entrance", she said.

"The Berry Hill Lane entrance next to CISWO is now closed and locked.

"Mansfield District Council are aware of the caravans on Berry Hill Park.

"It is suggested that people avoid the park whilst the police are overseeing - and most particularly please avoid the area where the caravans are behind the Bloomsbury Gardens homes - beyond the far side of the athletics track at the Black Scotch Lane side.

"It looks probable that they may be there over the weekend - and we’re unsure how long, though steps are being taken as much as possible."

It is unclear whether the travellers are the same group that was evicted from Birchover Community Centre in Bilborough on Friday.

Inspector Nick Butler, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Police were called to the gates of Berry Hill Park, Litchfield Lane, shortly after 11am this morning after a group of people were reported to be driving caravans onto the site.

"Nobody was arrested but officers have remained at the scene throughout the course of the afternoon to liaise with people in the park.

"As trustees of the park Mansfield District Council may now opt to issue legal proceedings to move people on.”
