Police 'increasingly concerned' about missing dementia sufferer

At the time he left home, Mr Mainland was wearing a blue body warmer, purple top, black trousers and brown slippers ( PA )

Police are increasingly concerned about an elderly dementia sufferer who has gone missing from his island home.

James Mainland, 88, has not been seen since he left his house in Birsay, Orkney, at about 6.30am on Saturday 7 July.

It is believed he will stay in the local area, with Police Scotland asking people in and around Birsay to check their garages and outhouses in case the pensioner has taken shelter there.

It is believed Mr Mainland will hide from members of the public, but police warn he could be violent if he is approached by people he does not know.

Mr Mainland is 5ft 8in tall, of slim build with blue eyes, short white hair and a short white beard.

At the time he left home he was wearing a blue body warmer, purple top, black trousers and brown slippers.
