Police increase patrols in Openshaw after man shot in chest

A man was blasted in the chest during a shooting in Openshaw.

The 26-year-old man was left with a bullet wound in his chest after shots were fired on Bob Massey Close, on Monday.

A police spokesman said he remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of money launder.

He has since been released under investigation, pending further enquiries.

Police patrols have been stepped up in the area while detectives continue to investigate.

Officers have stressed it is believed to be an isolated incident and there is not believed to be any further threat to the public.

Senior Investigating Officer Mark Astbury, of GMP’s City of Manchester Division, said: “This was a serious incident which saw a young man very lucky to not lose his life as a result of the injuries he suffered.

“We are working meticulously to establish the details surrounding this event and we are continuing our investigation to ensure we bring those responsible to justice.

“I would like to reassure the local community that we believe there is no further threat to the public but extra high-visibility police patrols will be present in the coming days to ensure the safety of those in the area.”
