Police in Wishaw are appealing for information from the public after youths were spotted starting a fire near a local community centre.

At 9.55pm on Sunday, a groups of six teenagers were spotted at Pather Community Centre removing items from a skip and then setting them alight.

Firefighters from Scottish Fire and Rescue quickly attended and the blaze was extinguished.

Police have no description of the youths involved but are currently studying CCTV in a bid to catch those involved.

Work is currently going on to refurb Pather Community Centre with the total cost of the project totalling £210,000.

The council, together with partners Procast, are replacing all windows, installing security shutters and undertaking roof repairs as and where required.

The centre plays a huge role in the life of the local community.

Prior to lockdown, activities which took place there included senior citizen events, bingo, art groups, church activities, support groups, councillor surgeries, dance classes, music classes, social functions and clinics.

Elsewhere, officers are keen to speak to anyone with information regarding an alleged assault in Coltness on Monday, July 26.

Police attended at Newark Drive at around midday where they saw two women fighting in the street and weapons being used.

Anyone with information on either of these incidents is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
