Police in Sunderland launch arson investigation after van fire outside Ryhope home

Police are investigating a suspected arson attack after a van burst into flames outside a Sunderland property.

Officers from Northumbria Police were called to the fire outside an address on Esdale, Ryhope, Sunderland, in the early hours of Tuesday, September 1.

Both Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident, in which no-one was injured.

Nearby residents posted on social media about the fire and said the van was almost completely alight.

Police are treating the incident as suspected arson and are appealing to the public for any information.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 2.20am today (Tuesday) we received a report that a vehicle was on fire outside an address on Esdale, Sunderland.

"Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished. Nobody was injured.

"An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire, which is currently being treated as suspected arson.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact us via the ‘Tell Us Something’ of our website or by ringing 101 quoting log 95 010920."
