Police in rooftop stand-off with a man in Blyth

Police are negotiating with a man who has climbed onto a roof in Northumberland.

Officers are trying to bring the man to safety and have placed a cordon around the area in Blyth on Saturday morning.

People have been asked to avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident.

Witnesses claimed to have seen a police helicopter, police dogs and armed officers at the scene of the incident which is believed to have been going on for several hours.

Many residents have gathered in the area around Wright Street.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Police are currently dealing with an incident in Blyth where a man is on a roof.

"Police are currently negotiating with the man to try and bring him to safety.

"A cordon is currently in place and people are asked to avoid coming to the scene."
