Police in riot gear swoop on derelict pub after man locks himself inside and 'makes threats'

A man locked himself inside a derelict pub and 'made threats'.

He also threated riot police scrambled to the scene in Harpurhey on Sunday afternoon.

Tactical Aid Unit officers were sent to The Jolly Miller pub on Fernclough Road at around 1.35pm on Sunday.

A cordon was put in place around the boarded up building. Surrounding roads were closed.

Negotiators tried to engage with the man and he was later brought out.

Police said a 49-year-old man was taken to hospital to be assessed.

A 48-year-old woman, also inside the former pub, was taken to hospital for treatment. It is not known whether she was hurt.

A cordon was put in place between Church Lane and Harpurhey Road while police dealt with the incident.

In a statement, GMP said: "At around 1.35pm on Sunday 26 May 2019, police were called to a premises in Fernclough Road in Harpurhey to reports that a man had locked himself inside and was making threats.

"Emergency services attended and tried to engage with the man to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

"A 49-year-old man has been taken to hospital to be assessed.

"A 48-year-old woman has been taken to hospital for treatment. Enquiries are ongoing."

No further information was revealed by police.

Police urged anyone with information to call 101 quoting incident number 1070 of 26/05/2019 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
