Police in Leeds react after masked joyriders terrorise Roundhay Park

West Yorkshire Police have responded after a group of masked quad bikers caused "mayhem" at Roundhay Park at the weekend.

An eyewitness told LeedsLive that people scattered as the group tore along paths and rode through the popular park in north Leeds on Sunday, May 3.

"The area is full of toddlers and dogs, but also lots and lots of wildlife and nesting waterbirds," they said. "The noise and mayhem... people scattering, kids screaming with fright."

A spokesperson for the force has now confirmed that increased patrols will be carried out by the local neighbourhood policing team in a bid to deter further disruptive behaviour.

In a statement, they said: "From about 4.30pm on Sunday (3/5) police received a number of reports from members of the public about a group riding quad bikes dangerously and anti-socially in Roundhay Park and the surrounding area. The riders were masked and their vehicles had no registration plates.

"Officers attended to search the area for the group and deter any further incidents.

"The incident has been raised with the local neighbourhood policing team who are increasing their patrols of the area and are liaising with off-road bike team officers who are involved in proactive operations to target this type of activity."

The police spokesperson also reminded those involved that officers in Leeds have special powers to arrest people caught riding quad bikes, dirt bikes and similar vehicles in an anti-social manner.

An injunction was put in place several years ago after a group of more than 100 bikers sped through Leeds on a 'Mad Max' style Halloween rideout in 2016. 13 people were jailed following the incident.

"A special injunction remains in place, which bans anyone from taking part in the anti-social driving of motor vehicles involving two or more vehicles in a public place anywhere in the Leeds district," continued the West Yorkshire Police statement.

"It carries a power of arrest and also forbids people from promoting, organising or publicising the anti-social driving of motor vehicles."
