Police in Glasgow launch bike marking campaign after almost 200 stolen from south side

Police have launched a bike marking and registration campaign following the theft of almost 200 bikes from the south side of Glasgow.

Officers from Glasgow South East Police division were out in Queens Park at the weekend to register and mark bikes owned by locals, and will be doing the same next weekend at Pollokshields Primary.

The theft of the huge number of bikes has been the motivational factor behind the free scheme - which is a simple and effective way to protect bicycles from theft.

Police are urging bike owners in the area to be vigilant following the spate of thefts, and have confirmed on Friday that five people have been charged in relation to seven thefts so far.

Glasgow has seen a surge in people cycling in the city amid the coronavirus pandemic, with figures released by bike share operator nextbike revealing that nearly 17,000 Glaswegians registered for their bike scheme in June alone.

Meanwhile, Glasgow City Council have installed a number of pop-up cycle lanes throughout the city in an attempt to encourage Glaswegians to swap four wheels for two.
