Police in awe 'no one killed' after car flattened during crash

A car crash in Mid Ulster has left police wondering "how on earth is no one dead?"

It is understood the vehicle, containing five passengers, left the road near Bellaghy before smashing through a fence, hitting large rocks, flipping and then colliding with a concrete block which saved it from entering a river.

PSNI Mid Ulster said on Monday night that all five people inside were injured in the incident.

The incident took place just before 1.30am on Sunday on the New Ferry Road in Bellaghy.

They have appealed for motorists to "take the foot off the gas" and put all their effort in concentrating on the road as "one of the main factors in this collision was unfamiliarity with the road layout".

A PSNI spokesperson said: "There are times in the hours following an incident when you step back, look at what you have been dealing with and in the silence think 'how on earth is no one dead?'

"One of the main factors in this collision was unfamiliarity with the road layout. The car left the road near Bellaghy went through a fence, hit large rocks, flipped then collided with and knocked over the huge concrete barrier.

"There were five people in the car when it crashed and was flattened, all in the car have received injuries."

"If the concrete barrier hadn't been there the car would have ended up in the River Bann," they added.

"It may sound like a stuck record but again we say, when you're driving take the foot off the gas and maximise the concentration when you're on the road. If you're a passenger you also have a huge responsibility within the vehicle.

"We need a big effort from everyone to prevent these far too regular smashes across Mid Ulster."
