North Belfast security alert ends following discovery of ammunition

A security alert in North Belfast following the discovery of a suspicious object has ended.

Police and ATO examined a number of suspicious objects, which were located in the area this afternoon close to Eithne House in the New Lodge area.

The PSNI placed cordons and the public were told to avoid the area.

A number of rounds of ammunition were found and all the items have been removed for further forensic examination.

Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee said there is no place for guns on our streets.

"There is no doubt that the removal of this ammunition has helped to save lives.

“There is no place for guns on our streets.

"Those behind it have little to offer and do not have the backing of the local community.

"Those responsible should get off the backs of the community.”

Police have also been advise motorists to avoid the area and to seek alternative main routes for their journey.
