Stabbing in Cardiff ends in car smash in city centre and police imposing stop and search powers

Police have brought in extra powers after a man was left with "serious" injuries after a stabbing in Cardiff.

The man, 20, was stabbed in an assault on Muirton Road, Splott, at around 4pm on Saturday.

His injuries are described as serious but are no longer believed to be life-threatening, according to South Wales Police.

There was then an "escalation in tensions" and a number of other incidents linked to the stabbing. South Wales Police have now been given powers to stop and search anyone in the Tremorfa area.

It is in effect from 11am on Sunday for 24 hours.

The so-called Section 60 Notice allows any officer in uniform to exercise the powers under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 meaning they can:

• Stop and search any pedestrian, or anything carried by them for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments without good reason
• Stop and search any vehicle, its driver and any passenger, for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments.

The order is intended to prevent serious violence, find dangerous instruments or to apprehend anyone carrying weapons.

The four were arrested after a high-speed police chase in Cardiff city centre.

The four, arrested on suspicion of vehicle taking and possession of drugs with intent to supply, were found hiding in bins by police dogs.

The chase started in Tremorfa, Cardiff, and ended with a crash near the Sainsbury's store on Dumfries Place in Cardiff city centre.

Images released by the roads policing team show a large amount of damage to cars and to the bus shelter near the supermarket.

Vehicles are shown in the pictures on the wrong side of the road.

Last month police introduced the same powers in the Butetown and Grangetown areas of Cardiff after two unrelated stabbings.
