There is growing disquiet about the failure of Rio de Janeiro's police to take seriously repeated death threats to Vilmar Berna, editor of a daily newspaper about the environment, Jornal do Meio Ambiente. He has also suffered regular intimidation. In one instance, a blood-stained, partially-charred body was left outside his front door. Weeks later six men forced their way into his home and threatened him. Berna's paper recently revealed the illegal use of fine-mesh nets by Rio fishermen. (Via ifex.org)
