'Our mate': Body found in bushes outside Hobart hospital identified

The man's family has asked that his identity not be revealed.

The body of a man found in bushes outside Royal Hobart Hospital has been formally identified, Tasmanian police say.

The body is that of a 47-year-old man who had been living in Hobart's CBD.

Next of kin have now been notified but police will not release his name, at the request of family.

The body was found by a passer-by about 2:00am on Tuesday.

Police said there were no signs of foul play, but pathology reports suggested the man's body may have been there for several days.

The last confirmed sighting of the 47-year-old was on October 15.

It is thought he presented at the hospital on October 13.

Flowers, cards and tributes have been left at the place where the 47-year-old was found.

Police are appealing for information in relation to the man's death.

He was wearing a black zip-up polar fleece top, grey track pants and white sandshoes.

The body was found in a line of bushes near the top of the ambulance ramp on Liverpool Street, one of Hobart's main pedestrian thoroughfares.

Police said it was not surprising it took some time for the body to be found because of how it was positioned in the bushes.

The cause of death will be determined by the coroner.
