Police hunting would-be robber who threatened Stanley shop worker with hammer

Police are hunting for a man who threatened a shop worker with a hammer in an attempted robbery at a County Durham store.

Officers from Durham Constabulary were called to the S and N store, on Park Road in Stanley at around 10.30pm on Wednesday, July 14 after reports of an attempted robbery.

It was reported that the man entered the store and threatened a staff member with a hammer while demanding cash from the till.

However, the man was challenged and he made off from the scene on foot.

The suspect is described as being in his 20s, white and wearing a black hoodie, a black face covering, dark grey Nike tracksuit bottoms and he is also said to have a distinctive walk.

A spokesperson for Stanley Police said: "Can you help officers investigating an attempted robbery in Stanley?

"Officers are appealing for information after an incident at the S and N store, in Park Road, at around 10.30pm on July 14.

"A man is believed to have entered the store and threatened a staff member with a hammer whilst demanding cash from the till. He was challenged and made off on foot.

"The suspect is described as being in his 20s, white and wearing a black hoodie, black face covering, dark grey Nike tracksuit bottoms. He is also said to have a distinctive walk.

"If you have any information call 101 and ask to speak to West CID team at Stanley quoting incident number 88 of July 15.

"Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
