Police are hunting two suspects who broke into a Sainsbury's Local in the early hours of this morning.

Officers were called at around 1am on to reports of a two male suspects who were breaking into a shop in Peterlee.

The suspects fled when officers arrived at the scene - one riding a bike and the other on foot.

It is unknown what the suspects took from the Grampian Drive store.

The store has been unable to open for business this morning while staff assist officers with their investigation.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: "Our Peterlee store is temporarily closed to support the police with their investigation. We will reopen open as soon as possible and are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause."

Inquiries are now ongoing to trace the duo responsible.

The suspect who got away on the bike is described as wearing a grey hoodie, black gilet, grey bottoms and trainers.

The second suspect was wearing a hi-vis jacket which was later found discarded nearby.

He was also wearing a balaclava and dark tracksuit bottoms with a white line down each side of the leg.

Anyone with any information on the break-in should contact Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 8 of October 30.
