A police search is continuing in Queensland's Wide Bay area for a 53-year-old man who officers believe is dangerous and may be armed.

Police said Alan James Lace fled after his car was intercepted by police in Maryborough, south of Bundaberg, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Substantial amounts of dangerous drugs, cash and drug materials were allegedly found in Mr Lace’s abandoned car on the Bruce Highway.

Police said Mr Lace fled by foot into nearby bushland.

Mr Lace is believed to be in Maryborough or Childers and is described as Caucasian and bald, with brown eyes and around 180-centimetres tall.

In 2001, Mr Lace was convicted of the murder of Margaret James and sentenced to life imprisonment.

He has since been released.

Police said they had not actively been seeking the 53-year-old when his car was intercepted.

Detectives are appealing for public assistance to find Mr Lace but said people should not approach him as he may be armed.
