Manhunt ends after car crash and alleged assault in Rockingham

West Australian police are interviewing a man who was the subject of a major police manhunt, after a car was allegedly driven into a house in Perth's south and the occupant assaulted, leaving him in hospital with serious injuries.

About 7:10am a man was spotted driving erratically near the intersection of Dixon Road and Mandurah Road East, in Rockingham.

Shortly afterwards the car crashed into a house on Barnes Street in Rockingham.

The driver then attacked the occupant of the house, leaving the 60-year-old man with what police say are serious injuries.

The victim was taken to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment.

Local resident Andrew Johnson said the crash could very clearly be heard this morning.

"I was just sitting out the backyard this morning and there was this loud bang," he said.

"I mean you could hear it very, very clearly, the dogs were going off and given where I live I don't really get involved in what's going on, there's a lot going on in this street.

"It was a significant noise and it was only a few minutes later when you can hear all the sirens come screaming down the road."

Mr Johnson said the incident saddened him, and made him scared.

"To tell you the truth it doesn't surprise me around here," he said.

"It's not a really high-class area, there's been home invasions just down the road."
