Police hunt man who climbed from wreckage of horror crash and fled scene in Mercedes

A man who was involved in a serious crash in Leeds on Sunday night was seen climbing from the wreckage of his car and fleeing in a black Mercedes.

West Yorkshire Police were called to the A64 York Road in Cross Gates at around 8.30pm last night (Sunday) following the collision.

A black Volkswagen Touareg had crashed into a lamppost near the junction with Cross Gates Lane. The impact of the crash completely destroyed a lamppost and left the car with significant damage, with debris littering the carriagway.

Despite the high impact of the collision, eyewitnesses told officers that a man was helped out of the wreckage and driven away from the scene in a black Mercedes.

The road was closed in both directions throughout Sunday evening as police cleared the road of debris and removed the Volkswagen from the scene.

Officers have since traced and recovered the Mercedes that was seen leaving the crash site, but they are still trying to identify those involved.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers on 101 quoting reference 13200194275 or online via the force's online chat service.
