Police hunt launched after drone sighting briefly closes East Midlands Airport

East Midlands Airport was shut down on Wednesday morning after a drone was spotted in the area.

Police said they are searching for the person responsible after flights were grounded on the runway at around 8am.

Flights were halted and a number of incoming flights were seen circling while they waited to land.

Shortly afterwards the airport reopened but police are now searching for the person involved.

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: "Following a drone sighting at East Midlands Airport this morning officers are currently working to identify the person responsible.

"We are working closely with staff at the airport and the airport was closed briefly for safety reasons but the impact on flights has been kept to a minimum."

An East Midlands Airport spokesman said: "A drone sighting at East Midlands Airport this morning is currently subject to an ongoing Leicestershire Police investigation.

"The airport closed briefly between the hours of 8am and 9am. Impact on flights has been minimal.”
