Police investigate alleged hit-and-run Audi driver after cyclist dies in Newport crash

Police are investigating an alleged hit-and-run after a cyclist died after being hit by a car in Newport city centre.

Officers have confirmed that a 37-year-old man from Newport died after the crash near the Cenotaph.

Emergency services were called to Caerleon Road at 2am to an accident involved the cyclist and a silver Audi A3 that didn't stop at the scene. A 26-year-old man from Newport has now been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently in police custody

The cyclist was taken to The Grange Hospital where he sadly died.

Chepstow Road, Caerleon Road and Clarence Place were all closed for most of Wednesday morning as police investigated at the scene.

A large police cordon was put in place as investigations were carried out at the scene.

Officers are appealing for witnesses and drivers with dashcam footage to come forward.

A statement from Gwent Police said: "Officers are continuing to carry out enquiries.

"We're asking for any witnesses or anyone who was in the following areas around 2am this morning who has dashcam footage to contact us."

The areas are:

  • Clarence Place
  • Newport train station
  • Old Green RoundaboutClarence Bridge/Town Bridge
  • Malpas Road

In a separate incident, an accident closed another road in the city from the roundabout at Docks Way to B&M Bargains in Newport on Wednesday morning.
