Police hunt gunman after 'targeted' shooting

A man was shot dead at a house on Carr Parade in Unanderra.

A person remains on the run after a fatal shooting near Wollongong overnight, which New South Wales Police said they believed was targeted.

Neighbours reported hearing several gunshots outside a house on Carr Parade in Unanderra, on the NSW south coast, about 2:15am today.

Police and paramedics attempted to revive a man who is believed to be in his 30s, but he died at the scene.

"We believe this is a targeted shooting," NSW Police Detective Chief Inspector Glen Broadhead said.

"We do not believe that the community at large are at risk."

Police do not know what type of firearm was used, or how many shots were fired.

A neighbour who did not want to be identified said he heard gunshots but no other commotion in the street.

"We were awoken by dogs barking and then we clearly heard two shots fired and there was no other sort of sounds or activity after that," they said.

Detective Inspector Broadhead said the victim was "known to police".

"We don't know what the motive for the shooting is at this point in time, however there are a number of inquiries which we will make so we are," he said.

Another neighbour said the area was peaceful, other than "occasional" incidents.

"It's quiet ... you get the occasional domestic fight going on, there's been some issues with dealers in some of the rental houses around here, but beyond that, it's a nice, quiet place," he said.

A crime scene has been established at the home.
