Liverpool fan wanted for police questioning after seven-year-old hit in face by gas canister

Police want to speak to a Liverpool fan after a seven-year-old was hit in the face with a gas canister.

The object was allegedly thrown from the Liverpool supporters' section of St Mary's Stadium during the Reds' win at Southampton on Saturday.

A young Southampton fan, who was sat with the home supporters in the close vicinity of the away end, was hit by the canister.

Hampshire Police now want to speak to a man in connection to the incident.

A police statement said: "Do you recognise this man?

"We are looking to speak to him in connection with an incident at the Southampton v Liverpool football fixture at St Mary’s on Saturday 17 August.

"An item was thrown from the Northam stand away end into the Northam stand home section shortly after the second goal.

"The item, described as a nitrous oxide (NOS) canister, hit a seven-year-old Southampton fan.

"He suffered minor injuries.

"If you recognise this man or have any other information about this incident, please call 101 quoting 44190293624."

Liverpool secured a 2-1 win at Southampton, a result which made it two wins from two in the Premier League this season.

Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino scored for Liverpool before Danny Ings claimed a goal back for the hosts, courtesy of a goalkeeping howler from Adrian.

Liverpool return to action on Saturday evening when they host Arsenal in the Premier League.
