Police hunt for Bristol man after 'despicable' tourist carved names into Roman Colosseum

Police are hunting for a Bristol man after a 'despicable' tourist was filmed carving names into the 2,000-year-old walls of Rome's famous Colosseum. The video, which has been uploaded to Youtube by @rytz5873, shows a man etching "Ivan and Hayley 23" into one of the world's most important Roman monuments, reports the Express.

A Carabinieri police source in Rome told the newspaper: "The people we are looking for have left the country but we are sure that we will have their precise location by the end of the day. I can confirm they are British residents, and the man is younger than the woman.

"They are travelling together and arrived in Italy on June 21 and left on June 26. The man is of Bulgarian origin and the woman British. They were staying in a bed and breakfast on the outskirts of Rome and we have their details.

"We are happy we have identified the male but the woman has not been identified as she is not seen in the video taken at the Colosseum but they are travelling together." It's now understood that the suspect is currently living in Bristol.

Under the Youtube post, which has been viewed more than 300K times, people have slammed the man. One wrote: "Absolutely despicable behavior and I hope they get fined for it or worse. The cheeky smile at the end shows he CLEARLY knew what he was doing was wrong. This is what entitlement looks like."

Another said: "This is disgusting. We don’t need these kind of tourists in Europe. He should be tracked down no matter the cost and extradited to Italy and dealt with in the court."

A third penned: "The grinning arrogance says it all. Disrespectful"
