Police hunt fireraisers after four suspicious blazes are set in Paisley

Detectives are probing a series of dangerous deliberate fires in Paisley over the weekend.

Emergency crews tackled a flat blaze in Wellmeadow Street, while a car was set alight and destroyed in Storie Street.

Two suspicious fires were also set at the same block of flats in Main Road Ferguslie on different days. Officers say they could be
linked.

Scottish Fire and Rescue crews raced to Wellmeadow Street, in the town’s west end, around 11.50pm on Saturday after report of a fire at an empty property.

A number of roads were closed as firefighters remained on scene throughout the night as they fought to bring the blaze under control.

A police probe has now been launched after investigators discovered it had been set on purpose.

There were no casualties reported.

Officers are also appealing for information after a car parked in Storie Street was completely destroyed by flames in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The windows of the 04 plate motor had been smashed on Saturday before it was completely written-off by the fire around 12.55am on Monday.

The Paisley Daily Express understands this was a targeted attack.

Meanwhile, two small fires were also reported at a block of flats in Main Road Ferguslie.

The first happened around 4.55pm on Friday.

And the second happened between 11.30pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday..

Both are being treated as wilful fireraising.

Detectives are appealing for information on all of the incidents.

Detective Inspector Bob Bowie, from Paisley CID, said: “Over the course of the weekend a number of wilful fireraising incidents occurred in the Paisley area.

“Setting a fire deliberately is a completely reckless and dangerous act which could result in very serious consequences.

“Thankfully, there were no casualties as a result of the incidents this weekend but we are very keen to trace the individuals responsible for each.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in relation to these incidents to get in touch with police.

He added: “If you have any information at all, then please come forward.”
