Police hunt after 'masked men' enter house and fire gun in Derry

TWO men have escaped injury after a “number of masked men” reportedly entered a house in Derry and fired a gun.

The incident – which police said happened around 9pm on Sunday, November 27 – took place in Culdaff Gardens in the Creggan area of the Northern Irish city.

Creggan, on the outskirts of Derry and close to the border with the republic, was a hotspot during the Troubles. It was also in Creggan where the journalist Lyra McKee was shot dead in 2019.

PSNI Detective Inspector Finlay said: “Sometime around 9pm, it’s believed a number of masked men entered the house, one of whom was said to have been carrying a firearm, and fired a shot at the front door before making off.

“Two men were in the house at the time.

"Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at this time.”

“Our enquiries are continuing, and we are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have any information which could assist us, to call us on 101, quoting reference number 1877 of November 27, 2022," the officer added.

Social Democratic and Labour Party leader and Foyle MP Colum Eastwood tweeted: “Innocent lives put at risk because of guns on our streets. Derry doesn’t want this.”

The incident comes after police confirmed that device left in a hijacked vehicle outside a police station in Derry on Sunday, November 20 was a viable bomb.

Officers had previously said the object was an elaborate hoax made to look like a car bomb.

During the incident a delivery driver was hijacked by three masked men and made to drive his car to Waterside police station, where it was abandoned.

It sparked a major security alert which led to some children not being able to get to school.
