Police horse still recovering after being mauled in east London park

A police horse is still recovering after it was attacked by a dog at a park in east London.

Urbane was attacked while out on patrol with another police horse in Victoria Park on March 22.

Footage circulated on social media last month showing a man jabbing at the dog, named Coco, with a large stick.

Coco then bit Urbane’s leg and held on as the horse began to buckle.

The dog was finally pulled away and the officer dismounted before shouting “get that lead on that dog now.”

Urbane has now been moved to the Horse Trust in Buckinghamshire to help aid his recovery.

The Horse Trust is a specialist charity that cares for retired working horses and ponies.

Jeanette Allen, chief executive of the charity, praised Urbane for having "served Londoners faultlessly at many events", including Trooping the Colour and the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. She said the charity was honoured to be entrusted with Urbane’s ongoing recovery.

Sgt Carly Harber, from the Met’s Police Mounted Section, said Urbane was a “remarkably dependable horse with a playful side to his character.”

He is said to have settled nicely into his new home and to have befriended his vet’s black labrador.

The dog - which was off its lead - remains in police kennels. Its owner was interviewed under police caution but not arrested.
