Police horse dies in ‘tragic accident’ after crashing into metal barriers at Blackpool football match

A police horse has died in a "tragic accident" after slipping and falling against some metal barriers after a football game.

The horse called Morecambe suffered a serious stomach injury and was pronounced dead at the scene in Blackpool despite receiving urgent medical attention from a vet.

The incident happened shortly after the League One match between Blackpool and Fleetwood.

Morecambe crashed into the barriers at a pedestrian crossing near the ground at around 5.20pm on Easter Monday, Lancaster Constabulary confirmed.

The rider was taken to Royal Preston Hospital by air ambulances with some injuries.

Police said it is believed he fell into the side of the horse box after Morecambe became injured.

Chief Inspector Sue Bushell, of Lancashire’s Constabulary Mounted branch, said: “We are all completely devastated by the loss of Morecambe in such tragic circumstances.

“The horses are a big part of our police family and Morecambe will be sorely missed by his riders and many colleagues from across the force.

“Our thoughts remain with our injured colleague at this extremely difficult time.”

The force added that there were no suspicious circumstances, saying in a statement: “This was a tragic accident.”
