Police hope Lanarkshire killer Raymond Bell's conviction will bring comfort to victim's family

Police have said they hope the family of Lanarkshire dad David Black will have been given comfort by the conviction of his killer.

Raymond Bell was convicted of murder earlier this week after previously being found guilty of attempted murder for the assault, which took place in Rutherglen in 2015.

Mr Black, from Blantyre, passed away in 2019, having required round the clock care since the attack took place.

Bell, who had previously been jailed for nine years for attempted murder, was then placed on trial again, this time for murder, and sentenced to life in jail yesterday.

Detective Inspector Alan McAlpine said: "We welcome this conviction today. It is very unusual for someone to be convicted in these circumstances and therefore this has been a complex investigation.

"David Black endured a brutal and violent attack, which lead to him requiring around the clock care, and in the end resulted in his death.

"We hope that this result will be of some comfort to David’s family and friends, who have also suffered at the hands of Bell’s actions."

On November 2 2014 Mr Black was seriously injured within Bell's flat on Lochaber Drive in the Springhall area of Rutherglen.

Both men had been at the property along with another man and a woman, when an argument broke out.

Bell, 36, then attacked David with a table leg and stomped on him before fleeing the flat. It was a further three days before Mr Black was found.

The 35-year-old was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary with critical injuries.

Bell went to Blackpool in what prosecutors called "fleeing the scene of a crime", being being arrested two weeks later.
