Police hit out after Milltown cemetery fire

Police have hit out following a fire at Milltown cemetery in West Belfast.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 5.30 pm on Saturday.

It's understood a pile of rubbish had been set alight.

Police said in a statement on their West Belfast Facebook page: "A small fire has been started in Milltown Cemetery. Fortunately no graves have been damaged and NIFRS [were] on scene dealing with the fire.

"This behaviour is unwanted by the local community and this is a place where many loved ones are laid to rest. We will continue to patrol the area for the rest of the evening."

A spokesperson for Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service told Belfast Live that one fire crew attended.

They said: "It was at Milltown cemetery at the main gate.

"We attended and yesterday at 17.34 we got the call."
