Police hide cameras in trees to capture alleged syndicate burying drugs in bushland

Police called in SES volunteers to help search for the syndicate's drugs and money in bushland at Sheldon.

Police and SES crews are scouring bushland in Brisbane's south-east for drugs and money suspected to have been stashed by a "highly sophisticated" drug trafficking syndicate.

Detectives used cameras hidden in trees to film members of the network burying drugs on two properties at Sheldon and Ransome as part of an 18-month investigation.

Four men and a woman have been charged with drug trafficking after officers executed search warrants at their homes on Wednesday.

Police said the group had links to the Comancheros bikie gang.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Mooney said large quantities of cocaine, methylamphetamine, heroin and cannabis were uncovered during the arrests.

Officers also seized about $300,000 in cash, eight vehicles, phones, jewellery and gun cases.

Senior Sergeant Mooney said police hoped to unearth more of the syndicate's drug stash during bushland patrols.

"We placed covert cameras in the bush which we will allege captured our offenders burying the drugs and recapturing the drugs," he said.

"While surveillance hadn't been maintained on these locations in the last few months, we do suspect there will be money and or drugs at these places."

SES crews have spent much of the day searching for holes and loose soil at the sites.

Police had already seized a kilogram of cocaine at one of the locations.

Senior Sergeant Mooney said the syndicate had been operating for some time and was responsible for trafficking a significant volume of drugs to the Brisbane region.

He said police had conducted hundreds of hours of surveillance in a bid to dismantle the group.

"The syndicate is a highly sophisticated syndicate — it's taken a [lot of] work for investigators to get to this point in time," he said.

"We believe this will have a significant impact on the drugs being supplied within the South Brisbane district area."
