Police helicopter scrambled after theft on East Prescot Road

A suspected thief was held by police minutes after a delivery rider's motorbike bike was stolen on a busy Liverpool road.

The force helicopter was called out after a rider's motorbike was stolen on East Prescot Road.

The helicopter supported the police on the ground who 'pursued' the suspects, who then abandoned the bike.

Police held one person at the scene.

Yesterday (January 2) the force's Roads Policing Unit shared a photograph of the recovered bike and a statement which read: "This delivery rider's bike was stolen from East Prescot Rd. Within minutes #Syn1 and @NPASNorthWest had located it and pursued the offenders until they abandoned the bike and made off on foot. One detained nearby by other MATRIX officers #OpBrookdale #MRPU."

Last month around 50 Deliveroo riders held a protest about crime in the Liverpool area.

They congregated outside a number of locations including Anfield stadium, Stanley Road in Bootle and the new police headquarters in north Liverpool.

Organisers claimed that delivery riders had been 'targeted' by criminals in the Liverpool area.

The protest followed a reported theft of a motorbike on Stanley Road in Bootle on December 18.,

Police said they had increased police patrols in affected areas and both high visibility marked police cars and unmarked vehicles with plain clothed officers have been focusing on popular delivery routes.
