Police helicopter over Lockleaze in Bristol overnight as woman rescued

A missing woman was safely rescued from the railway line in Bristol after a police helicopter crew joined the search to find her.

The National Police Air Service (NPAS) based at Almondsbury in South Gloucestershire was sent up last night (Monday, January 3) to look for the "vulnerable" woman.

One person in Lockleaze contacted Bristol Live shortly after 11pm, reporting that the helicopter "has been here for a while searching through the rail line".

NPAS South West shared an update on Twitter just after 3.30am this morning (Tuesday, January 4) explaining why it had been deployed above the city.

It shared footage of the moment the woman was rescued, after she was seen walking unsteadily along the tracks mere metres away from passing trains.

The tweet read: "This is the moment the #Almondsbury crew located a vulnerable missing female on the railway line near #Bristol.

"Teamwork between ourselves, @BTPAvonSomerset & @ASPolice allowed the female to be safely taken off the tracks and to a place of safety for further care."

The video was time-stamped 10.43pm last night.

NPAS assisted officers on the ground from Avon and Somerset Police and British Transport Police (BTP) with the successful mission.

Many people took to social media last night questioning why the helicopter was up over Bristol.

One person, writing on the public Love Lockleaze group, said it was "hovering over my house" along Morris Road.

Several others said the searchlight appeared to be focused on the railway line and that the noise had woken them.

One woman commented: "I find it reassuring to hear the chopper. How lucky are we that we have one to help keep us safe."
