Police helicopter launched after reports of man with firearm

A police operation was launched in Weston-super-Mare after reports of a man with a firearm.

Officers were called just before 9pm yesterday after reports from a member of a public of a man with a firearm in the Winterstoke Road area of the town.

The police helicopter was also scrambled and a search of the area carried out.

Police also carried out house to house enquiries in a bid to search for the man.

Despite an extensive search, no one was found.

No other sightings of the man were received by the force.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at 8.43pm last night (Sunday 12 July) following a report from a member of the public who believed they had seen a male with a firearm in the Winterstoke Road area of Weston-super-Mare.

"Officers attended to carry out a search of the area, with assistance from the police helicopter.
