Police have launched an investigation after a man was assaulted in the Arndale

Police have launched an investigation after a man was assaulted in Manchester Arndale.

Part of the ground floor of the shopping centre was cordoned off for a number of hours following the attack at about 4.30pm on Sunday.

The victim, a man in his 20s, suffered minor injuries.

Police have described the incident as an assault, while accounts from the scene suggest the victim was stabbed.

One witness reported seeing armed police and blood on the floor at the scene, close to the Corporation Street entrance.

No arrests have been made.

Inspector William Jennings-Wharton, of GMP’s City of Manchester district, said: "I understand that this news may cause concern so I would like to reassure members of the public that a thorough investigation is underway and initial enquiries suggest that all of those involved in this incident were known to each other.

"Officers are quickly piecing together exactly what happened but, as always, I would encourage anyone with information to contact us."

In a statement earlier today David Allinson, centre director at Manchester Arndale, said: "We can confirm an incident involving three individuals took place in the lower mall at Manchester Arndale on August 2 at approximately 4.45pm.

"The area was cordoned off by Greater Manchester Police but it has now been lifted.

"The situation is under investigation and we are therefore unable to comment any further at this stage."

Anyone with information should contact police quoting 2416 of 02/08/20 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
