Police halted a number of Perth youths for binge drinking and 'unacceptable behaviour' over the weekend

Police officers had to intervene with 16 young people at both Inches in Perth over the weekend due to binge drinking or “unacceptable behaviour”.

An 18-year-old woman was also charged with purchasing alcohol for under 18s.

Officers engaged with almost 200 young people congregating in the North and South Inch areas last Friday and Saturday in a continued effort to prevent anti-social behaviour and deal with any that arose.

Another issue highlighted at both Inches by officers was one of littering.

Across the weekend, hundreds of bottles of various types were removed from the grassy areas by PKC Environmental Services, and broken glass was found in numerous places.

Officers have branded it “selfish, reckless, and puts others at risk”, not to mention a potential risk of injury to dogs and other wildlife.

As a result police patrols are set to continue at both Inches this weekend.

Officers on patrol last weekend did, however, add that it was “notable” that incidents of anti-social behaviour, while still occurring, had “decreased considerably” from the previous two weeks.

Of the almost 200 or so young people spoken to over last weekend, the vast majority were “well-behaved and posing no problems”, with officers thanking everyone who had adhered to the current guidelines and enjoyed their weekend appropriately.

Inspector Kerry Lynch said: “While it is good to see that most are getting the message with regards to how to behave and adhering to guidelines, there are still a few who spoil things for everyone else, either through poor behaviour and intoxication, or leaving a mess behind them.

“The Inches are public spaces used by everyone, and it is extremely selfish and thoughtless not to leave them as you find them and put your rubbish in bins as appropriate.

“Our officers will be out again this coming weekend to deal with any issues that may arise.

“Please don’t give us any cause to have to deal with you for poor behaviour, flouting of guidelines, or inconsiderate actions.”
