Police had to break up a group of people having a barbecue in a city centre park amid the coronavirus lockdown

Police have had to disperse a group of people who set up a barbecue in the middle of a city centre park.

A group of 'about 11 people' were seen congregating in the middle of Sackville Gardens, less than 24 hours after the government announced a nationwide lockdown.

One man who was walking past spotted smoke from the barbecue and says the group had also brought three crates of beer with them.

He says police arrived and asked them to disperse, with one officer having to extinguish the barbecue.

He said: "I was just walking back to my flat and I saw that they were in the park.

"There must have been about 11 of them, they had three crates of Budweiser.

"I could see the smoke from the barbecue, then I saw a police car turn down the street and officers get out.

"They went over and spoke to them, one of the officers had to put the barbecue out.

"They looked like they were starting to move on."

On Monday night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced major restrictions in the fight against coronavirus.

The country has been told to stay at home and only leave for "very limited purposes", including shopping for basic necessities and medical needs.

Some parks remain open, but gatherings are not being permitted.

The man, who lives in the city centre and had briefly left his home, says the rest of the area around the village seemed quiet, but noticed a large number of police on patrol.

He added: "For the most part, people, people do seem to be keeping their distance from each other, it's really quiet, you just see people with shopping bags or joggers

There seems to be a lot of officers out and patrol cars, more than usual".
