Police guard Ikea from 3,000 teens planning to play hide and seek in furniture

Police officers were called to guard an Ikea store from 3,000 teenagers who were planning to play hide-and-seek among the furniture.

The game was due to take place at an Ikea building in Braehead, Glasgow, on Saturday, however police thwarted the fun.

Despite some of the attendees managing to sneak into the store, hiding in fridges and cupboards, others were stopped upon entry and turned away.

The event, which was organised over Facebook and billed as 'Glasgow's biggest hide and seek', fizzled out when participants spotted the heavy police presence.

Scotland Police sent five officers to the store and Ikea bosses also called in private security, The Sun reports.

Rob Cooper, the store manager for Ikea Glasgow, told  STV : "The safety of our customers and co-workers is always our highest priority.

"We were aware of an unofficial hide and seek Facebook event being organised to take place at our store and have been working with the local police for support.

"While we appreciate playing games in one of our stores may be appealing to some, we do not allow this kind of activity to take place to ensure we are offering a safe environment and relaxed shopping experience for our customers."

Hide-and-seek games have taken place at other Ikea stores in the past, with 500 people participating in a game in Belgium in 2014.

Bosses originally turned a blind eye to the fun, however they eventually had to ban the events due to the increasing number of people taking part.

An Ikea spokesman said the company appreciates that people want to have fun in its stores, however the behaviour is prohibited.
