Police give update on pedestrian hit by van near Consett as officers appeal for witnesses

A pedestrian who was hit by a van near Consett is expected to recover after being taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The man in his 60s suffered injuries to his head after being knocked down outside the Cricketers pub on Durham Road , Blackhill, on Wednesday.

Just before 9.15am, police were alerted by the ambulance service to the collision at the junction of Durham Road and Laburnum Avenue.

Both roads were closed for around two hours while emergency services treated the victim and accident investigators examined the scene.

A crew from the Great North Air Ambulance, who had landed in the nearby Blackhill and Consett Park, treated the man who was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), in Newcastle, although his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of the vehicle involved, a Ford Transit van, was not injured.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service added: "We were called at 9.07pm to a patient injured outside of the Cricketers pub.

“We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance, one Hazardous Area Response Team and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"A male patient has been taken to the RVI by road with head injuries."

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to contact them.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: "This is a fairly busy area at that time of the morning and we would appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident to get in touch.

"We would also like to take this opportunity to thank drivers and residents for their patience during this morning’s disruption."

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call Durham Constabulary’s roads policing unit on 101, quoting reference 0094 of November 6.
