Police give update on claims baby was 'assaulted' in Shieldfield in Newcastle

A baby allegedly assaulted by its own drunk mother is "safe and well", say Northumbria Police.

The force is continuing to investigate the claims over a week since they came to light.

The youngster was understood to have been taken into temporary care after police were called over claims its mum "slapped" the baby's head.

Witnesses say the child was wearing just a nappy as the mum drank wine with two men in the middle of a Shieldfield estate late at night.

"The baby was in the pram in the freezing cold at night and the mum was screaming 'can someone shut this f****** baby up'," one witness said.

"I went and offered a blanket and just got loads of abuse from the group.

"The woman then put the baby in the pram and the baby was screaming and the mum slapped it in the face."

The incident happened on Wednesday December 4. Police are understood to have been called the following morning.

No-one was arrested by police.

A police spokesperson said: “Enquiries are ongoing. We can confirm the young child concerned is safe and well.”
