The victim, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital for treatment.

Detectives said they believe the incident was "isolated" and a "targeted attack", and there is no wider threat to the community.

In an update today, Merseyside Police confirmed the victim has now been discharged from hospital.

A 33-year-old from Wavertree and 49-year-old from Anfield who were arrested have now been released on bail pending further enquiries.

In a statement on Sunday, Detective Inspector Matt Kerr said: “Two men are under arrest and will be questioned as we carry out initial enquiries into this incident.

"Anyone who witnessed what happened or has any information is urged to come forward and officers will remain in the area to continue their work.

“This will cause understandable shock given the public location and seriousness of the assault, but I’d like to assure people that we believe it was an isolated and targeted attack, and there is no wider threat to the community.

“If you know anything, tell us and we continue to take action.”
