Police give update after body washed up on Longsands beach in Tynemouth

Police are today still working to identify a body found washed up on a beach.

The remains were discovered at Tynemouth Longsands, in Tynemouth, at shortly after 6am on Saturday.

Police were called and officers are still working to identify the body.

The Chronicle understands the body was that of a male.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Shortly before 6.20am we received a report that a body had been washed up on Longsands Beach, Tynemouth.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances around the incident and to identify the person found.”

On Saturday morning a number of uniformed police officers could be seen close to the ramp on the south side of the beach.
