Police get extra time to question student over fatal stabbing of teacher

Police have been given extra time to question a student over the fatal stabbing of a teacher in front of her pupils.

Spanish teacher Ann Maguire, 61, was months away from retiring, after working at Corpus Christi Catholic college in Leeds for more than 40 years, when she was attacked in a classroom on Monday morning.

On Wednesday, West Yorkshire police confirmed a 15-year-old boy, who was detained by staff following the stabbing and arrested at the school, remained in custody.

Officers said they were given permission to continue to hold the boy by magistrates in Leeds on Tuesday night.

Scores of the children arriving for school on Wednesday morning stopped to read hundreds of messages pinned to a mass of floral tributes outside the school gates.

Some laid fresh bunches and many others started to write their tributes directly on to the school fence with marker pens.

Detective Superintendent Simon Beldon, who is leading the investigation, said: "The suspect remains in custody and will continue to be interviewed today. Last night we were granted an extension by magistrates which has given us additional time to question him today.

"Our inquiries are ongoing and we are still in the process of interviewing a number of pupils who witnessed the incident."
