Police get 'dispersal notice' to combat 'gangs of youths' around Salford's Peel Park

Police have been authorised to arrest loiterers caught returning to a problem area around a Salford Park.

Officers in Lower Broughton have been granted a dispersal notice in an effort to counteract gangs of young people who have been causing problems in the area.

The order lasts 48 hours and began at 5am today (Tuesday). It covers streets around the park and the Heath Avenue Estate.

Police said they had been receiving reports of ongoing anti-social behaviour in the area.

A spokesman for GMP's Salford team warned residents about the order and asked that parents keep their children away from the exclusion zone.

They said: "Residents of Lower Broughton, due to a recent increase in gangs of youths congregating on the Heath Avenue Estate causing anti-social behaviour in the area a Section 35 Dispersal Order has been authorised for a 48-hour period. This will run between 5pm on July 14 and 4.59pm on July 16.

"Any youths congregating will be approached by officers and will be issued a direction to leave notice and a copy of the attached map.

"Anybody who fails to cooperate with the notice and fails to leave or return to the area in the stated time period is liable to be arrested.

"We encourage parents in the area to keep their children away from the area whilst the Dispersal Order is in place."

Anyone with information about anti-social behaviour or ongoing problems in Salford should contact police on 101.
