Police freeze property worth Rs 1 crore belonging to drug smugglers in Punjab

PATIALA: The police in Punjab's Sangrur district have freezed the property of three drug smugglers as part of a drive against them. The police said these drug smugglers were habitual offenders and several NDPS cases were registered against them in the past.

The police have freezed their agricultural land, houses and vehicles under section 68 of the NDPS Act. Cops revealed that the three accused were already lodged in the jail and investigation was carried out about the property owned by the accused smugglers in the past six years.

"There is a provision in the act under which the investigation is carried out about the total property of the accused owned in the past six years as there are possibilities about the Disproportionate Assets (DA) of the smugglers against their sources of income. The accused now cannot sale their freezed property. We have freezed properties having worth around Rs 98 lakhs of three accused whereas a similar action, probably next week, will be taken against four more such accused smugglers against whom we have completed the investigation", said Surendra Lamba.

He added that investigation against six more drug smugglers was started after which action can be taken against them.

The police said that "freezed" property can be forfeited under the Act after the DA proved against such smugglers who had managed or earned the property by selling drugs.
