Police, firefighters and NHS staff can get 60 per cent off shopping

Anyone who works in the NHS, fire service or for the police can get 60 per cent off supermarket food and other produce thanks to a scheme being running at six shops.

Company Shop Group allows anyone who works in the NHS or for the police or fire service to buy supermarket products with a discount of up to 60 per cent.

According to The Mirror the chain stocks food and a wide range of products from stores including Aldi, Asda, Co-op, Iceland, Lidl, Ocado, M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose.

The company, which has six shops, redistributes surplus food and products from major retailers - selling the unwanted items at a huge discount.

Last year it handled 70 million items and redistributed 23,607 tonnes of surplus food.

This could be anything from food with a short shelf-life that's been oversupplied to products with damaged boxes or items with old packaging or branding on them.

Other examples of items stocked include discontinued lines, trial products, and stock with foreign labels.

Only people who work in the food manufacturing supply chain or in the emergency services or NHS can get the deals.

You can apply for membership if you're in one of the following groups:

  • Employees who work in the FMCG food supply chain.
  • NHS (including volunteers, students, GP Practices & NHS Dentists)
  • Police Officers (including special Police Officers)
  • Fire Service Staff
  • Those in receipt of a qualifying pension from the groups above

But there are only six stores, all of which are in the north of England; Corby, Grimsby, Middleton, St Helens, Washington, and Wentworth -  you can find your nearest branch, here .

To use it, you'll need to complete an application form on the Company Shop Group website and upload two recent payslips as proof of eligibility.

It is completely free to sign up and, once approved, shoppers are issued with a membership card that they show in-store.
