Police fines as up to 70 people gather in Lenton courtyard and set off fireworks

Police responded to reports of a large gathering of people in a courtyard while fireworks were set off during the early hours.

Officers attended Radmarsh Road in Lenton on Sunday morning (November 22) where up to 70 people were reported to be gathered.

Police said the group dispersed when officers arrived and that some people tried to evade officers while others tried to hide in flats.

Residents caught received fixed penalty notices and were fined £200 for a first offence.

Officers also spotted one man who had previously been issued with a fixed penalty notice for attending a party in October and therefore he was issued with a further ticket.

His fine will now double to £400 for breaking Covid regulations.

Neighbourhood Inspector Amy English said: "I cannot reiterate enough how serious the situation we currently find ourselves in is.

“The majority of people are complying with the restrictions and I am grateful to those who understand their responsibility in preventing the spread of Covid-19.

“That being said, there are a minority of people that feel as though they do not have to follow the rules and we will continue to take action against them.

“Working closely with our partners, we will continue to engage with those who are not following the guidance and, should it be deemed appropriate, we will issue fines.”
