Police find shotgun in Manchester churchyard

Police have found a shotgun in a churchyard in Gorton.

Officers discovered the weapon in the grounds of St James Church on Wellington Street yesterday (Thursday).

A number of police vehicles and Tactical Aid Unit vans were stationed at the scene as the search was carried out.

It has not been confirmed by GMP whether the shotgun was loaded.

Detective Inspector Charlotte Quinn, of GMP's City of Manchester division, said: "This result takes another suspected firearm off the streets that could have been used in a criminal activity.

"We rely on the help and information provided by the public to take firearms off the street.

"Anyone with information or suspicions should contact police via our LiveChat function at www.gmp.police.uk or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
