Police find gun and knife after fight involving three men in south Manchester

Police have found a gun and a knife after descending on a south Manchester street following a fight involving three men.

Officers were called out to a disturbance on Stanhope Street, Levenshulme, at around 3pm on Thursday (July 1).

The fight appeared to be over by the time police arrived on the scene - but officers searching the area spotted a hunting-style knife and an air pistol.

Two people were initially arrested, but one has been removed from the investigation while the other - a 17-year-old boy - has been released pending further enquiries.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "During a fight between three men, one of the men was seen to discard a firearm into a nearby bush.

"Officers attended and although there was no fight ongoing on their arrival, a firearm and hunting-style knife were found near the scene.

"The firearm was examined and identified as a gas-powered air pistol.

"Following initial enquiries, two males were located at an address nearby and arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of a firearm.

"One of these males has been eliminated from enquiries and the other, a 17-year-old, has now been released under investigation."

Residents living close to the scene told the Manchester Evening News that police descended on the neighbourhood following a 'commotion'.

"Around 3pm I was going to get my son from school," said Samaira Chaudhary.

"They were fighting each other, and I think they had a weapon.

"A teacher came out and told them they were scaring the children, and they soon went off.

"A while later the police came over and the road was blocked off."

One Stanhope Street resident, who wished to remain anonymous, added: "I saw some people in a car, and someone walking towards it, then it drove off.

Police were also seen on Rostron Street (Manchester Evening News)

"I don't really know what it was all about, but there were quite a few police here, I think two or three vans.

"There was a bit cordoned off and a guy had handcuffs on, and then the police stuck around for a while after that."

A resident on nearby Rostron Street told the M.E.N. that police had also been in attendance on her street as they investigated the scene.

Anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage from the incident is asked to contact the officer in the case directly by emailing 16879@gmp.police.uk, quoting log 1776/1806 of July 1, 2021.

Information can also be reported to GMP online or by using the Live Chat function at gmp.police.uk, or by calling 101.

Alternatively, contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.
